Confusing title I know, but bare with me here!
My working week is Monday to Friday all day, and Saturday mornings. This is so I have some time Saturday afternoon to do other things, sometimes work related, sometimes not, and Sunday is a ‘proper’ day off. This past Saturday was particularly busy. It went a little like this: • 8am-12pm – Normal busy Saturday morning with one-on-one clients • 12pm-3pm – Quick change of clothes and off to pick some friends up for a wedding suit measuring appointment • 3pm-4:30pm – Weekly food shop, with the return journey made worse by a traffic jam • 6pm – A party to go to
Now, I am not for a second complaining about anything here. I love my work, am looking forward to getting married, we need food, and who doesn’t enjoy a party?!
My point here is the timetable. Everything had a set time to either start or needed to be finished by so I could start something else. I’m not ashamed to say I was quite stressed out by the time I got to the party, and it took a little while before I relaxed and enjoyed myself.
Contrast this with my Sunday. We got up without an alarm, had some breakfast, then went down to get some food from a great shop called Bamboo Turtle (everything is eco-friendly, no plastic! Check them out!). Once home, I cleaned the gym, did a little bit of gardening, then just chilled for the rest of the day.
I woke up Monday really well rested and notably relaxed, and it got me thinking why? I have every Sunday off, why do I feel so revitalised this Monday in particular?
The conclusion I came to was simple: on Sunday I barely took any notice of the time at all. This wasn’t a conscious thing, it just happened.
There was no morning alarm to wake me.
I ate when I was hungry, rather than my usual meal times.
There wasn’t anything good on TV, so no schedule to stick to there either.
My whole week is dictated by time. And it was so nice to not even consider it for one day out of the seven.
This is now going to be something I try and do whenever I get the chance. Workdays it won’t happen, (clients arrive and leave at specific times, that’s unavoidable) but any days off I may have, time will be a minor consideration.
I felt great on Monday, and I want that feeling again.
Give it a go when you get chance. Hopefully you’ll feel the same!
